There's this thing about meeting up with someone you haven't seen in awhile and they don't recognize you. They walk past you and when you tug at their sleeve and they look you all a-wonder and then it dons on them that you are, in fact, "you." Worse, it seems like a split second later they ask you if you have lost weight.
Matter of fact, I haven't lost any weight. I have been the same weight for about a zillion years but I tell you what, there are some days I don't recognize myself. Turns out, my friend didn't recognize me, either, and I nearly ran into the bathroom to check and see if I was, you know, "myself."
What do you say when someone exclaims: "Wow! I didn't recognize you, you look so good!"
Worse: I came home after lunch and now it is after 10 p.m. and I still haven't knit a stitch. Plus, I have to deal with some estate issues (There have been some deaths in the family and it turns out I'm executor of at least one of the wills.) You know, legal stuff, and I would rather knit, to be honest.
This is the song I've listened to about a thousand times this evening by Al Green (Talking Heads did it, too, among others.) If the verse doesn't catch you, look for the end of it for the whereabouts of the free pattern.
Take Me to the River
I don't know why I love her like I do
After all the changes you put me through
Take my money, my cigarettes
I haven't seen the worst of it yet
I wanna know that you'll tell me
I love to stay
Take me to the river, drop me in the water
Take me to the river, dip me in the water
Washing me down, washing me down
I don't know why you treat me so bad
Think of all the things we could have had
Love is an ocean that I cant forget
My sweet sixteen I would never regret
I wanna know that you'll tell me
I love to stay
Take me to the river, drop me in the water
Push me in the river, dip me in the water
Washing me down, washing me
Yeah, well, I must be nuts tonight, but I think when I reveal what's really on my mind, you'll give me a pass:
I'm off to Disneyland for the next two days.
Meantime, enjoy the free pattern in my absence. Love to you all and see you on the weekend, after the ordeal. Take a look at the sidebar, Free Patterns, for the Link of the Easy Flame Lace Scarf.

Happy a good and enjoyable day at the Disney's. :)

Thanks for the fabulous Easy Flame Lace Scarf. There is nothing quite as fun as experiencing Disneyland with a young child (I'm not kidding). We went for my daughter's 4th birthday (she wanted a Princess party.....we met all the Disney Princesses instead).

Yeah, it's like the time I got a short pixie hair cut, was wearing a north face puff jacket and hat and went up to a friend on WMU campus and she gave me the meanest look because she thought I was a strange man hitting on her… I will never cut my hair that short again!
Thanks for the free pattern. SO generous and so cool!
Thanks,
Jill
P.S. That song is my husbands fav!

I have executed estates recently. It is practically a part time job. You'll need the Rev. Al and knitting to help you thru! Have a good trip.

I've not yet worked with the Malabrigo lace weight (I'm addicted to the worsted, and have a serious thing going for the chunky, too). My LYS just started carrying it. Perhaps a trip is in order...
I've decided that I will become a Knitter with a capital "K" when I have made (and, most importantly, BLOCKED) lace.
Oh, I'm an estate and probate legal secretary in Real Life. I know there's a lot of paperwork to deal with right now. Hang in there!

Al Green is magic.
Keep listening.

I hope you have a great time and you don't have to queue too much.

Being the executrix sucks. I feel for you!
Have fun at Disneyland! I am heading to a not so LYS that is for sale this weekend. DH is all for me buying it.....we'll see.

Thanks for the cool free pattern. I have been trying to knit lace for a while and always give up about half way thru. I have been reading you blog for some time and decided to finally say thanks. You are able to write and put "out there" things that I would hardly even think to myself sometimes...
Have fun at Disney.

May your lines be short, and temps cool...and I hope it is better than your last trip no matter what!

Have fun at Disneyland. I'm envious! Thanks for the pattern. I love the scarf.

After college, I lost a lot of weight. (I'm tall, so the amount of weight I lost always shocks people, since I didn't look TOO heavy to begin with.) A couple years ago I went home for my high school class's 10 year reunion, and everybody was like "Wow, you look GREAT!" At first, I took the comments as they were meant to be -- compliments. But after a while, I couldn't help but think "Geez... did I really look THAT bad in high school?!"
Have fun at Disney!

Oh, I feel for you. I've been winding up a full year of serving as co-executrix of my parents' estate. What a nightmare. It should NOT have to be this hard, on top of the grieving. I pray that you can escape the bizarre family behavioral changes that seem to occur when the word "Will" is invoked. Have fun at Disneyland!

I am totally in love with Al Green and that's one of my favorite songs.
Thank you for the pattern.

The cuteness of you in an ELMO t shirt, with the love of your scarf! OY!!
Posted by: flutter | August 29, 2007 at 11:30 AM
Thanks for the pattern. That's great that your acquaintance didn't recognize you and thought you look fantastic. Just say "thanks!" Sorry to hear about the executrix job - it's never fun to be named that. I can relate to wanting nothing more to knit all day and ending up doing everything but! Have fun in Disneyland!

Hmm, small child, Disneyland...good luck! :)

The scarf looks great -- thanks for sharing the pattern! I hope you have a wonderful time at Disneyland.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you! This will be my second attempt at lace. I was intimidated by lace forever, and then I started Cozy from Knitty, and now I'm obsessed with lace. I already ordered Lanas Puras Melosa laceweight in Desert Bloom, in anticipation of making this scarf. It's so pretty, I can't wait!

Were you wearing your big sunglasses? Maybe that threw her off.
LOVE the Elmo shirt!

Disneyland is hot and sticky, friends. But I'm in a nice hotel right now and reading your comments. Oh, and I'm having a gin and tonic, too!

As Madeleine L'Engle said, "Comparisons are odious." And it doesn't matter whether these tactless troglodytes are comparing you to other people, to your former self, to your potential future self or what. They need to stop acting like Simon Kalb or any other judge.
Friends don't judge friends.
(Dis-mounting from my high horse.)
PS: I know what Madalyn means about people acting so bizarre if you express deserved pride in losing more than five pounds!!
